"Hello everyone, I'm Michele from Oklahoma, USA. I'm excited to share a remarkable development from our state this week (March 2024) in hopes of inspiring you. The passage of Senate Bill 1470, known as The Survivor's Act, is a significant milestone. This legislation allows the full story to be presented in court, potentially leading to reduced sentences for women who have defended themselves against violent partners in domestic disputes. It's a crucial step forward, offering hope to countless survivors who've faced the agonizing choice between self-preservation and incarceration at the hands of their abusers.
I'm deeply passionate about the importance of safety, and I firmly believe that items like our safety keychains are more than just stylish accessories; they're essential tools for protecting ourselves in our daily lives. Through my connection with Cydney and her company, I've not only acquired keychains for myself and my daughters but also had the privilege of ensuring they reach women in both the US and Canada.
The significance of this bill hits close to home for me. In 2021 alone, my county received over 45,000 domestic violence calls, yet fewer than 1,000 resulted in arrests. Having experienced firsthand the challenges of seeking help, including being dismissed by a domestic abuse hotline in 2018 because my bruises weren't visible, I've come to recognize the pervasive crisis we face. It's a call to action for all of us.
The progress made in Oklahoma this week is truly groundbreaking, offering hope for broader change nationwide and beyond. While I may not be able to place safety keychains in the hands of every person, I urge you to consider owning and carrying one legally. And if you have the means, I encourage you to pay it forward and help others access these vital tools.
